Participate in our Fit-Friendly Program

The Fit-Friendly program recognizes employers who champion the health of their employees and work to create a culture of physical activity and health in the workplace. Worksites can apply on an annual basis for our basic Gold level recognition and/or our advanced Platinum level recognition. In addition, worksites can apply annually for our unique “Innovation” award. These are awarded to worksites that creatively implement programs to promote physical activity in the workplace and/or community. Recognition is valid for one year and worksites must renew annually Together we can reduce the lives lost to heart disease and stroke.

CPR in Schools will soon be a reality in Texas.

This past Friday, Gov. Rick Perry signed legislation that makes Texas the 11th -- and largest -- state to require CPR education for graduation from high school. The law goes into effect for the Class of 2015.

This is quite a milestone because of the sheer numbers involved. Texans comprise 9 percent of all high school graduates in the country, or 280,000-plus students per year. That means that by 2020 there will be well more than a million more Americans equipped with this lifesaving knowledge from the Lone Star State alone.

Congratulations and thanks again to ourYou’re the Cure advocates. The nearly 13,000 emails sent to lawmakers and other efforts to spread the word were invaluable. This is truly a victory everyone can take pride in.

Also, late Friday evening Governor Rick Perry approved an AHA-supported appropriation for the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke which will be used for stroke/STEMI data collection. And the Governor also signed legislation for newborn screening for congenial heart defects.

Each of these three measures will have a significant impact on heart disease and stroke in Texas.
